This week we will get acquainted, get organized, and learn classroom rules and routines. Students will also complete several math interest inventories, skills surveys and assessments.

In our first unit of study, students will develop their knowledge of the Real Number System. Integers and order of operations concepts will be reviewed, and students will be introduced to rational and irrational numbers.


Wednesday, August 23

Common Core Standards

Student Objectives
Students will identify their interests, strengths, weaknesses, learning styles, etc.
Students will learn classroom rules, routines, and procedures.
Students will participate in get acquainted activities.

Bellwork
Students will locate their assigned seats.
Students will begin working on the “Back to School Survey.”
Students will write a question for the teacher on a slip of paper.

Lesson (Back to School Activities)
1. Teacher will welcome students and introduce herself. Student question slips will be collected.
2. “Ms. Minner’s Top 10 Reasons to Love 8th Grade Math” slide presentation
3. Pass out planners. Students write names in planners. Students sign distribution form.
4. Pass out code of conduct forms. Point out new rules. Answer questions.
5. Distribute syllabus and go over it with students emphasizing classroom rules, routines, and procedures while asking students questions, asking students to restate/summarize each section, and pointing out various important locations/information around the room. Homework will be getting it signed by a parent.
6. Name game (if time permits)
7. Distribute textbooks. Students will write their names in permanent marker in 2 different places on the book.
8. Students will set up math journals. Students will write their names in permanent marker on the cover, add table of contents, and add a signed journal contract after the class reads it aloud. Students will take a “quiz” over journal expectations.
9. ┬áStudents will take a guided tour of the teacher’s website.
10. Students in teams of 2 or 3 will create a “Top 5 (or Top 10) Reasons to Love Math” list or small poster.
11. Students will complete the “Got style?” learning style inventory.

Students will demonstrate their current level of knowledge of 8th grade common core math vocabulary.

Bellwork
Students will complete “What I know about Math” writing prompt.

Lesson (Back to School Activities/Common Core Math Vocabulary Pretest)
1. IXL set up: distribution of usernames and passwords, guided “tour” of the site, distribution of module 1 “To-Do List,” diagnostic test
2. Students will complete the “8th Grade Common Core Math Vocabulary Pretest.”
3. Planner review-school rules and code of conduct
4. Students will participate in “Find ┬áSomeone Who….” Bingo.
5. Teacher will introduce students to the XtraMath program by taking a guided tour on the SmartBoard. Students will be given information with usernames and passwords. This letter will need to be taken home and signed by a parent.
6. Students will set up their math binders:
-full name and math on cover in permanent marker
-syllabus in front of first divider with other class info like passwords
-first tab: bell work
-second tab: tools/notes/vocabulary
-third tab: tests/quizzes
-fourth tab: homework
-fifth tab: IXL
-sixth tab: other
-loose-leaf paper in back pocket of cover
7. Students will set up math portfolios that will be kept in the classroom.
8. Chromebook distribution
9. Overview of Schoology course. Students will join the course.
10. Introduction to bellwork procedures. Distribution of weekly bellwork forms.

Homework
Students will complete “My Life and Math” paper. It will be due on Thursday, September 1.
Students will get the XtraMath letters signed by a parent. Fill out “Student Information Form” with parent. The link is in the “Basic Information” folder of my Schoology course.


Friday, August 25

Adjusted schedule and shortened class due to 2 afternoon assemblies. Lesson plans revised.
